Matthew Leighton
President
My involvement in netball started in 2011 when I went along to support my future wife and her two daughters playing netball on a Saturday afternoon at Daph Geddes Park. For about the first five years I was a parent and partner/husband to netballers. I supported my wife when she started coaching at Alloway and went along for something to do. After two years of that I was coaching club netball and later that year stood in to a vacant Vice President role at Alloway. Within a year I was the Alloway delegate at BNA meetings while still coaching club. In 2020 I started coaching BNA Rep netball however COVID made that extremely tough. In 2021 I stepped up to a vacant BNA Secretary role as part of a transition to 2022 where I became President. I have a passion for coaching netballers as well as volunteering wherever I am needed.
Peta Tui’vailala
Vice President
Peta began her netball journey at just five years old, playing for the Blue Rangers in the Penrith Netball Association. After moving to Queensland, she continued her passion for the sport with The Shamrocks at the Bundaberg Netball Association. Following a period away from the game, during which she played indoor netball, Peta returned to the court as a coach for Fusion Netball Club in its inaugural season and has been a dedicated member ever since. Her commitment extends beyond club coaching, as she also coaches both school and representative teams and currently serves as an assistant coach for Bundaberg Rep. Peta has previously held administrative roles on the BNA Committee including Club Delegate and Umpire Liaison.
Karen Holloway
Treasurer
I started playing netball as an 8 year old in Challengers at Acacia Netball wearing a beautiful lilac and black tunic with black puffy bloomers. When we moved to Bundaberg in 1998, I became played for Natives Netball Club and became a club representative on the BNA committee in 1999. I have 3 children, Elizabeth, William and Catherine. Both of the girls played club netball as well as represented BNA in their rep teams. William became an umpire whilst we were involved with BNA. I only play netball socially now during their summer social season. Something people might not know about me is that I represented SE Qld as a 12 year old in a defence position. Up to this point, I had been a mid court player. I continued to play defence for the rest of my playing career.
Kylie Hanson
Registrar
Kylie Hanson, Registrar of the Bundaberg Netball Association, began her netball journey in the 1980s playing for local Bundaberg club Glenmac. She later transitioned to Bundaberg softball, a move that saw her entire family become deeply involved in the sport at all levels. For several years, Kylie’s father served as President of Bundaberg Softball, her mother was a club treasurer, and her younger sister also progressed through the ranks as a player. It was during this time that Kylie developed a strong appreciation for the vital role families and volunteers play in supporting and sustaining community sport. Kylie’s daughter commenced playing netball seven years ago, prompting Kylie to once again become actively involved, volunteering across many areas of the sport. Her son is also engaged with Bundaberg Netball, contributing through roles such as managing social media pages and running the coffee shop. Kylie’s message is Volunteering in community sport can at times feel overwhelming, but the rewards gained through creating lifelong friendships, working as a team whilst supporting the players and wider community make it incredibly worthwhile.
